Participants attending an ALSO Course learn practical, standardized team-based approaches to managing emergency situations. Although labor and delivery room emergency care is the program’s main focus, the ALSO curriculum further addresses preventive care and practice concerns, including medical complications of pregnancy, preterm labor, labor dystocia, trauma, and helping parents cope with a birth crisis.

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) sponsors the , an evidence-based, interprofessional, and multidisciplinary training program that equips the entire maternity care team with skills to manage obstetric emergencies effectively. Annually, The Department of Family and Community Medicine hosts an AAFP  course for family medicine residents and others who provide obstetric care. Cohorts include ��������, Houston Methodist, UTMB Galveston, UT McGovern Medical School, and HCA Houston Healthcare West.
